Attractions in Sitges: Sightseeing in Sitges Centre

Sitges is a small Spanish town brimming with things to do. It is likely that during a trip to Sitges you are not going to want to miss out on a trip to one of its picturesque beaches. However, whilst you are there, also ensure that you take a walk around the town and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. The town’s narrow streets are filled with whitewashed old buildings, many of which have an interesting history.

This page will cover some of Sitges’s most interesting attractions – its three museums, its cemetery, its beaches, its restaurants and its church. For a more general overview on tourism in Sitges – with information on the shops, art galleries festivals and sports, see our Tourism in Sitges page.

Beaches in Sitges

The beaches in Sitges are, without a doubt, one of its main attractions. They are always lively and bursting with people topping up their tans, taking swims and hiring out pedalos. For more information on the various beaches that Sitges has to offer, see our guide to the different Sitges beaches.

For more information on the Sitges beach in general and the services that are on offer, see our Sitges Beach facilities page

It is all housed within a beautiful building with bright blue walls and wooden beams on the ceilings.

If you enjoy art and your appetite has not been quenched by the three museums, there are a great deal of art galleries that you can visit throughout the town. For details on all of the art galleries in Sitges, see our Guide to Sitges Art Galleries.

The Cemetery in Sitges

The Cemetery in Sitges
The Cemetery in Sitges

The cemetery in Sitges is called the Cementari San Sebastia. It looks down over the town from a spot on high. It is free to enter and is very interesting to take a walk around. The cemetery is not just filled with tombstones, but also with old sculptures by modernist artists. If you stand in front of its white wall, you can enjoy views over the whole of the Sitges seafront. In the summer sunshine its interesting old tombstones look beautiful, adorned with colourful flowers and offerings. It is worth a visit if you are heading towards the beaches to the eastern side of the town.

Opening Hours:

The Cinema in Sitges

Cinema Retiro
Cinema Retiro

Sitges’s cinema is called Cinema Retiro and is part of a local recreational club. In true Sitges style, it sits within beautiful old gardens and is next to a bar where jazz is played. The cinema has no website, so in order to find out what films are playing and when, you should call the number below or simply drop by at the cinema. There are generally four films available to watch at any one time. Unfortunately films are not shown in their original language. They are dubbed into Castellano – so the cinema will only appeal if you can speak the language or simply like to watch the pictures!

Restaurants

Sitges in crammed full of places to eat – varying from fast food joints and cheap take aways to high-end restaurants in picturesque settings. As a seaside town, seafood can often be found on the menu. However, if you are craving different cuisines, such as Thai food or pizzas, you will find that these sorts of restaurants are not too difficult to find.

Remember that, as with all tourist towns, the main streets will offer meals at higher prices and not necessarily at the highest standards. Having said this, beach-front restaurants such as El Rincon del Pepe offer their fair share of quality cuisine in a beautiful outdoor setting.

Tip If you are interested in enjoying a luxurious three course meal but can’t afford high prices it is often a good ides to make lunch time your main meal of the day and go for a lighter dinner. Look out for restaurants offering the ‘Menu del Dia’ – this will allow you to enjoy a set three-course menu, normally with bread and wine, at an affordable rate.

For more information on the restaurants in Sitges, see our Restaurants in Sitges page.

Sitges is so much more than just a beach town. It has a history that stretches to way back before the civil war and boasts an array of beautiful buildings and views. It offers something for everybody.

Couples can enjoy romantic strolls along the promenade and luxurious dinners. Families can enjoy the museums, beaches and sports activities for the kids. Those looking for a fun packed holiday will fine a town brimming with bras and clubs some of which are gay and some of which have a more open policy. Sitges is, first and foremost, a beach town. However, there are other options for those who get fidgety after a couple of days of sunbathing.
